The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will be in Ann Arbor seeking public comments on the proposed cleanup of an old MichCon site along the Huron River. That’s the same site where Mayor John Hieftje and others have big hopes for a future riverfront park with other amenities, possibly even a riverside restaurant.

The Marquette County Road Commission has clearly marked the right of way public access available along the Salmon Trout River and County Road KK near Big Bay.

Public access at a bridge there … has been a concern for anglers and deputized club security guards, who have sought to keep trespassers off club property.

Pegged to April’s last Saturday, “It’s a later opener this year, and the fish have had two more weeks to drop back (after spawning.) It will still be a decent opener, but I think it will taper off quickly.”

The Huron Pines Rifle River Watershed Restoration project is getting closer to improving road-stream crossings where sedimentation and increased water flow are issues, according to Project Manager Abigail Ertel. The restoration project started in 2010, with much of the work from then through 2011 being volunteer recruitment and inventory of problem areas along the Rifle River, Ertel said.

The finding is significant because this stretch of river once ran thick with sewage and other pollutants. It has no meanders, in-stream habitat or riparian vegetation since it was straightened and encased in concrete for flood control in 1978 by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
